The district’s police spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi said the owner of the shop Safraz Ibrahim (based in Blantyre) noticed frequent losses and informed the convict that he would send auditors and later install CCTV cameras in the shop. She said this instilled fear in the convict who was addicted to DBR and aviator betting because by that time he had already wasted K45 million from the sales.

She said he, therefore, connived with his shop assistant James Mayere who is still on the run and paid him K1.5 million through Airtel money to set ablaze the shop and fulfilled the mission in the wee hours of April 22 this year.

Tepani Daudi said Master pleaded guilty to the charges of arson and theft of which Senior Resident Magistrate Muhammad Chande sentenced him to seven and four years imprisonment for arson and theft respectively. Both sentences will run concurrently.
