President Dr Lazarus Chakwera says the commemoration of Eid ul Fitri for Muslims across the country should remind people of the need to come together in assisting survivors of the Tropical Cyclone Freddy whose impacts are still in effect.

Chakwera made the remarks Saturday during Eid ul Fitri prayers held at the Muslim Sports Club in Lilongwe to mark the end of the month of Ramadan.

He said the theme for the prayers, ‘A better Malawi and a Quick Recovery to Cyclone Freddy’ is a great solidarity and a reminder to Malawians to come together and assist the survivors towards recovery because the impacts of the cyclone are still in effect across the country.

“In a special way, I would like to commend the Qadria Muslim Association for the choice of the theme this year because it is a declaration of our shared hope in our quest to recover from the devastating effects of Cyclone Freddy.

“Last month attack on our nation by this climate change enemy was the worst in our history. The damage I saw from Southern Region to Northern region are just heartbreaking,” said Chakwera.

Chakwera said the State of National Disaster declared will a little longer continue to be in effect as the country is in the process to mobilising resources worldwide in order to bring emergency relief items to the victims hence the theme by the association shows the spirit of oneness and solidarity.

Lilongwe Sunni Foundation Board of Trustee, Manscor Bedha thanked the President for attending the Eid prayers saying the gesture is a huge proof that he is the President of all denominations in Malawi.

On disaster, he said, the country continues to registers disasters every year and it is time to build more strong buildings and houses which are resilient.

He pledged the foundation’s support towards those affected by the disaster.

National Chairman for Qadria Muslim Association of Malawi, Sheikh Jafar Amiri appreciated the President’s gesture to attending the prayers as well as efforts to ensure things are well in the country.
