COMMUNITY ASK FOR BOYS HOSTELS AT CHIMBONGONDO COMMUNITY DAY SECONDARY SCHOOL

By Rose Cross Muhorya MANA

Communities around Chimbongondo Community Day Secondary(CDSS) School in the area of Traditional Authority Kampingo Sibande in Mzimba District have asked well-wishers to assist them in constructing a boys’ hostel at the school as one way of preventing male students from indulging in drug and substance abuse.

Speaking Saturday during a youth open day at Chimbongondo CDSS, Group Village Head Sumaili Chitaya, said the boys would concentrate in their studies more than is the case currently, adding that most of them drop out of school due to excessive beer drinking.

He said while the community is grateful that Plan Malawi International has constructed a girls’ hostel at the school, there is need for one for boys.

“Ever since the girls hostel was constructed, their performance has drastically improved and we believe that boys can do the same if provided with a hostel,” said Chitaya.

The village head made the appeal after Chairperson for Chimbongondo Youth Club, Madalitso Mhone revealed that aside alcohol and drug abuse, the male youths in the area engage in sexual relations with women whose husband’s travelled to South Africa for greener pastures.

District Youth Officer for Mzimba North, Misheck Msokwa said that the youths in the area will be considered for vocational and life skill trainings when an opportunity arises.
