Representatives of the Concerned Unemployed Teachers have expressed their satisfaction following a closed-door meeting with Ministry of Education officials.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA), Spokespersons for the Group, Blessings Gundadzuwa, expressed optimism after a productive discussion with ministry representatives regarding their concerns.

“The meeting was fruitful, and I would like to appreciate the Ministry for granting us an audience,” Gundadzuwa said.

He expressed hope that, as unemployed teachers, they anticipate positive changes from this interaction.

Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Dr. Rachel Chimbwete Boti Phiri encouraged the group to engage in open dialogues when facing such issues.

She acknowledged that there may have been room for improvement in the communication process within the Ministry.

“As a Ministry, we have learned that perhaps we could have handled communication about the recruitment process better,” Chimbwete Phiri stated.

Ministry of Education has been allocated K8.9 billion in the 2023/2024 budget for the recruitment of primary and secondary school teachers.

The recruitment process has been conducted in most councils, with the exception of nine councils.

The decentralisation of the recruitment process has enabled it to be carried out at the council level.

On September 15, 2023, the Concerned Unemployed Teachers sent a letter to government demanding that the Ministry of Education employ all IPTE 13 and 14 qualified teachers.
