ELDERLY PEOPLE TOUT SOCIAL CASH TRANSFER PROGRAMME IN RUMPHI

By Manasse Nyirenda MANA

Some elderly people in Rumphi say Social Cash Transfer Programme (SCTP) is a catalyst for their dignity as they are able to meet their daily basic needs using their monthly stipends.

One of the beneficiaries, Annie Gavu, 84 from Gavu Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kachulu in Rumphi said her life was very hard before being enrolled on the programme due to her old age and could not work and earn a decent living.

Suzan Mkandawire, a widow and mother of seven from Gwenjuka Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe says the money has also transformed her household as she takes care of her children without any challenges.

Mkandawire says she has been able to extend her house and roof it with iron sheets using the money she gets through SCTP.

District Social Welfare Officer for Rumphi, Zindaba Lungu said the programme has empowered at least 4000 households to venture into various livelihood activities.

SCTP is a component of a Malawi Government project, Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Project which is implemented by National Local Government Finance Committee with funding from the World Bank.
