An Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) power linesman died on Sunday after falling from an ESCOM pole near Mponela ESCOM office in Dowa, police have confirmed.

Mponela Police Public Relations Officer, Macpatson Msadala has identified the deceased as 40-year-old Dean Aaron Chipiko, who was on the day with his colleagues, installing Optic Fibre Cables on ESCOM power lines around Mponela Trading Centre and surrounding areas.

“At around 9 o’clock in the morning, Chipiko climbed a pole just outside Mponela ESCOM but while on top, the pole fell down and he hit the ground head first, and sustained serious head injuries.

“He was immediately rushed to Mponela Rural Hospital where he died while receiving treatment,” said Msadala.

The publicist said postmortem conducted at the hospital revealed that death was due to hemorrhage secondary to airway obstruction.

Msadala said investigations at the scene of death discovered that the pole the deceased had climbed onto was rotten at ground base, hence rendering it weak.
