KFW Development Bank of Germany has expressed satisfaction with how the newly constructed Nkhata Bay Market is being utilised, saying it will help in uplifting small scale businesses.
Speaking Thursday after touring the market, Head of Division of KFW Development Bank, Carsten Sandhop said apart from boosting businesses, the market will also add value to national development through revenue collection.
“It is important to empower the private sector with good marketing structures so that they develop their businesses, employ people and sale their products within and across the borders,” Sandhop said.
He, appealed to Nkhata Bay District Council to ensure that revenue realised from the market, through marker fees, should go towards development projects for the benefit of the local people.
District Commissioner for Nkhata Bay, Rodgers Newa said the market has helped address congestion due to limited space at the old market.
“The market incorporates crucial elements such as environmental protection, hygiene, spacing and design. We are grateful for this and we promise to make sure that we keep it in good shape,” Newa said.
The market, which also accommodates vendors from Likoma and Chizumulu Islands, is among the eight markets constructed by the Government of Germany across the country.
