President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has said, development partners cannot solve Malawi’s economic challenges hence they is need to increase tobacco production which is the country’s major foreign exchange earner.

On wednesday the president officially opened this year’s tobacco selling season at Lilongwe auction floors. The President said if production of tobacco can be increased to 200 million kilograms in the following years, the country’s economic challenges will be a thing of the past.

“We must do everything possible to support these tobacco farmers to increase productivity. Government will only support those who do the work and not just the consumers,” Chakwera said.

He appealed to stakeholders to support tobacco farmers by buying their produce at fair and reasonable minimum prices.

Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale said the opening of the tobacco market season means time has come for farmers to reap what they sow.

He said that this year there will be more tobacco sales because government had secured new buying companies.

Speaking earlier, Senior Chief Kalumbu said there is need to keep the tobacco prices in check from time to time because experience had shown that prices tend to drop in the weeks following opening of tobacco market season.
