The Malawi Government has this evening signed the Partnership Agreement with the Iceland Government which has committed about $11 million to implement various development projects in health and education sectors in Nkhotakota district. 

The signing ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Honourable Sosten Gwengwe and Minister of Local Government Unity and Culture, Honourable Richard Chimwendo Banda at the residences of the Iceland Ambassador in Malawi.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Honourable Gwengwe said the agreement speaks to the Government’s commitment to uplift the lives of ordinary Malawians within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) embodied in the Malawi 2063 as the overarching national agenda.

His counter part Honourable Chimwendo Banda said the $11 million will be used for implementing programmes in health, education and other sectors in the district.

He said that his Ministry will ensure that the programme is implemented with a sense of accountability and that every  development intervention should be a complete package.

According to the Head of Mission for Embassy of Iceland in Malawi, Ms Inga Dora Pétursdóttir; atleast 60 percent of funding from her government to Malawi goes direct to districts for development in various sectors.

Earlier in the afternoon the Honourable Chimwendo Banda signed the Memorandum of Understanding with Spark Micro Grant to implement programmes in rural areas of Lilongwe and Nkhotakota.
