The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), on Friday, declared Willard Alfred Gwengwe of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) winner in the Dedza central constituency by-election held on November 16th, 2023.
Gwengwe amassed 7,913 votes against two other contestants; Jacob Joseph Kaumphawi, Independent, who got 7,361 and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate, Andrew Ndekha Kowedza who got 403 votes.
Announcing the results at Dedza Residential Training Center, which was the district’s main tally center, MEC’s Chairperson, Chifundo Kachale, said the commission monitored the voting and was satisfied that the voting process was conducted in an environment where the electorates were free to elect a candidate of their choice without fear and intimidation.
Speaking in an interview, Gwengwe, said he expected victory and assured constituents to expect more developments ranging from infrastructure, good representation in parliament as well as improving the social welfare of people under Dedza Central Constituency.
