Government through the Ministry of Gender has been commended by the organisers of Lazarus Music Festival due to their involvement in educating Malawians on issues of people with albinism.
Lazarus Music Festival was held Saturday 10th June, 2023 at Gate Way Mall with an aim of raising awareness on the need to safeguard the rights of persons with albinism and was held under the theme, ‘Inclusion is Strength’.
Speaking at the event,
Director of Social Welfare in the ministry of Gender, Edward Chileka Banda emphasised on the need to continue supporting such events.
He said government is excited with Lazarus Chigwandali, a man with albinism who is advocating for the rights of people with albinism through arts.
He further said the festival is a catalyst for awareness and that as government, they will continue taking part in supporting such events and ensure that rights of persons with Albinism are protected at all times.
He said persons with albinism have all the abilities just like anyone and can do better in life and contribute to the meaningful development of the country.
He said governmet is championing inclusiveness, targeting persons with albinism, citing the Malawi Police Service which now has officers with Albinism.
Appreciating Government’s involvement in comemorating international albinism awareness, Lazarus said it is amazing seeing government supporting the awareness as this is an assurance that people with albinism are safe in this country.
As of today, Malawi faces a series of violation and abduction of people with albinism with children being the most affected, Malawi has over 10,000 people of albinism.
