MAN IN CUSTODY FOR MURDER

Police in Mangochi are keeping in custody 40-year-old Amiki Rashid, on suspicion that he burnt to death Mdala Mtasi, 24 and severely wounded Kazembe Bwanali, 22 after he suspected them of breaking into his house.

Confirming the matter, Public Relations Officer for Mangochi Police Station, Amina Tepani Daudi said the incident occurred on March 22, 2023 at Kadango Village in the area of Traditional Authority Namabvi in the district.

Daudi said it is alleged that unknown criminals reportedly broke into the suspect’s house on the night of March 21, 2023 and went away with two cellphones and K750,000.

“The suspect held the duo hostage in his house for two days, during which, he tortured and burnt the two with fire after smearing their bodies with petrol.

“When their conditions got worse, he took them to Namalaka police unit where he was apprehended. One of the victims succumbed to his injuries whilst the other is still receiving treatment at Mangochi District Hospital” Daudi said.

The suspect has since been charged with murder and acts intended to cause grievous harm and will be appearing before court after a completion of investigations.
