Local Government, Unity and Culture Minister Honourable Richard Chimwendo Banda has taken a swipe at the Zomba City Council Management over the delay to finish constructing the new Stadium in that City.
Honourable Chimwendo Banda, who visited Zomba Council for the first time since his appointment as the new Minister for Local Government Unity and Culture pinned Council Management for him to understand the reason why it is delaying to finish constructing the much awaited lone stadium in the City.
Honourable Chimwendo, who was companied by his deputy Honourable Owen Chomanika to an inspection exerxise at the construction site expressed dissatisfaction on a snails-pace construction progress of the stadium that is earmarked to host big local and international games.
He further requested both Council officials and the contractor to give the final timeframe for completing the much awaited stadium in the old capital city.
In his further remarks, the Minister said his administration wants to see the stadium completed within the agreed timeframe, hence the need for Council officials and the contractor to avoid laxity in the implementation process of the project.
He said; “I did not come here to find faults, but I want to share how my Ministry is intemding to spear head and fast track projects in the city. We want to emphasise and leave a footprint on what governmemt wants to do with the stadium… We should therefore avoid laxity and negative energy.
In his response, DEC construction company managing director Dan Tchale said the construction of the stadium will be completed within the next six months upon receiving the next tranche of the project funding.
Construction of the stadium commenced in 2017. According to officials, its project timeframe is 18 months. But it has delayed with six years- a development which the Minister described as a ploy to deny the people of Zomba their right to development.
Early this year, Honourable Chimwendo Banda told representatives of Zomba football lovers group that his administration will ensure the project is completed as soon as possible.
His Excellency President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera made a decree that all projects constructed under his administration be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
Since his first appointment in June 2020 as the first cabinet Minister, honourable Chimwendo Banda has been taking a critical approach in spearheading and fast tracking construction of the multi-billion tax payers funded projects.
For example, he made sure that the onstruction of the magnificent Blantyre Police Station should be completed within the set time frame. Other projects he successfully fast tracked include the construction of Grifin Saenda and Aquatic Sport Complexes in Lilongwe and the commencement of the construction of the much awaited Mzuzu Youth Centre.
