A one year old Boy Abraham Francis from Meja Village from Traditional Authority Mbenje has died after the boat he was sailing together with his mother capsized on Shire River on Monday morning in Nsanje.

Nsanje Police Public Relations Officer Agness Zalakoma has confirmed that the accident happened in the area of Group Village Head Mnembe in the area of Traditional Authority Mbenje.

She said the accident happened after a Hippo hit the canoe.

Zalakoma said the canoe had 37 people on board and only 13 were rescued.

“A body of one year old boy has been recovered whilst her mother is among 24 people that are still missing,” she added.

Meanwhile combined team of community members, Marine department and district council search and rescue team are still on the ground to search for the missing people.

One of the survivors Nelson Caros, 53 said he was rescued because he held a plastic bucket and was rescued by the community members whilst his wife is among the missing.

Nsanje District Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer, Mphatso Nedson said the rescue team are yet to find the missing people.
