Drama is far from over in the embattled opposition Democratic Progressive Party-DPP as Leader of Opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa and Cecelia Chazama have sought an interlocutory injunction for the court to nullify the party’s resolutions made in Mangochi during its National Governing Council-NGC meeting on December 13 2023.

Among others, the said meeting resolved to hold an elective conference on December 26-27 and also elected a Disciplinary Committee.

In the court documents we have seen, the two also want the court to order DPP President Peter Mutharika and the party to stop recognizing Dr. Clement Mwale as Secretary General.

Again, Nankhumwa and Chazama are seeking the court’s intervention to order Mutharika to stop removing or replacing them until a full determination of the matter is made.

Recently, Mutharika appointed Nankhumwa as his advisor replacing him with George Chaponda as DPP Vice President for the South.

He also appointed Chazama as his advisor, replacing her with Mary Navicha on the position of National Director of Women. Mutharika also moved Grezelder Jeffrey to the position of the Party’s Vice President for the Center.

Meanwhile, High Court Judge Howard Pemba has set December 19 as the date to hear the application.

On Thursday, Nankhumwa expressed disatisfaction on the formation of a Disciplinary instead of a Convention Committee but vowed to face Mutharika on the ballot.

Previously, Nankhumwa and others also moved the courts to nullify the party’s NGC resolutions on July 3 2023; arguing some members who attended the meeting were not eligible.

Political analysts doubt if the DPP’s dreams of returning to power after the 2025 general will materialize in the wake of the continued cracks, divisions and misunderstandings.
