Police in Lilongwe have launched a manhunt to apprehend five Garda World Security guards and some criminals for allegedly conniving to commit a theft crime of construction materials at Lilongwe Bridge.

Its spokesperson Hastings Chigalu says the five guards were providing security at the bridge which is under extension; a contract that was awarded to Nippon and Kanoike Construction Company.

Chigalu identifies the guards as Martin Banda, Paul Gomani, Blessings Tebulo, Blessings Mataya. He adds on 28 September, 2023, the suspects were working on night shift at the construction site.

“Then, unknown number of criminals arrived on a Toyota Nadia with registration number CZ 3640, and started loading construction materials including 64 scaffolding materials into the vehicle,” he says.

Chigalu adds the organised crime was disrupted by a project manager at the site whose abrupt appearance made the criminals and security guards to flee leaving the vehicle behind.

Recently, police in the city also recovered an engine pump which was stolen at the same construction site.
