Teethsavers International Malawi in partnership with Colgate Palmolive, has reached out to 36,626 pupils in Mzuzu, Mzimba North and Rumphi districts with oral hygiene messages.
The initiative is part of Bright Smile, Bright future (BSBF), a Colgate Palmolive Programme which seeks to educate young children aged between six and nine in primary schools across the country on oral health education and is being implemented by Teethsavers international Malawi.
Speaking on Monday after visiting Enkondhlweni primary school in area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mpherembe in Mzimba, Teethsavers International country director Fred Sambani said they want more pupils to acquire oral health knowledge.
Sambani said any sort of oral health, if not taken care of, can affect the entire body.
“Health should be in totality. The mouth and tissues are part of the body. Therefore, their health is part of the general health.
“So, when the mouth is in good condition, the speaker is confident,” said Sambani.
Besides encouraging the learners about oral hygiene, the organisation also urged them to have a career choice to fulfil their dreams.
Mzimba North District Health Office (DHO) Chief Dental Therapist Edwin Mhango commended Teethsavers International for the gesture saying good oral health practices are paramount mostly to the young generation.
“The intervention is important as it increases oral health knowledge among pupils,” he said.
Enkondhlweni primary school headteacher Kondwani Nkhambure said he was very excited that pupils are equipped with necessary knowledge in as far as oral health is concerned and further asked Teethsavers to continue with the awareness.
Some of the visited schools are Kalikonga, Mwene, Chimbongondo, Luhali, Emsinzini, Ehlekweni, Kafulufulu just among others.
Apart from training learners in oral hygiene, the organisation distributed tooth brushes and tooth paste to each pupil.
Oral hygiene is the practice of keeping one’s oral cavity clean and free of disease and other problems by regular brushing of teeth and adopting good hygiene habits.
