Police in Nsanje have launched a manhunt for a woman who allegedly abandoned a one-month old baby girl on Monday afternoon at Tengani Camp Bus Depot in the district.

Nsanje Police Station Public Relations Officer, Agnes Zalakoma confirmed the incident in an interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Tuesday.

Zalakoma said police were alerted by Mercy Kabudula who boarded a minibus at Ruo in Mulanje and sat close to a woman who was coming from Mulanje with a one-month old baby.

“At Tengani Camp Stage, the suspected woman asked Kabudula to hold her baby while she goes to answer the call of nature but never returned,” Zalakoma said.

Zalakoma added that the minibus driver waited for the woman to return but she never showed up to 20:00 hours when they concluded that she had abandoned the baby.

She said following the development, Kabudula reported the matter to Nsanje Police Station.

According to Zalakoma, efforts are being made to trace the baby’s mother, and currently, the baby is being kept at Nsanje District Hospital.
