23-year-old Stella Phiri is behind bars for allegedly concealing a newly born baby in a toilet at Engucwini in Mzimba District.
Mzuzu Police spokesperson Paul Tembo says the woman was sent to a maize mill nearby to grid maize.
It is reported that while there she complained of having a stomachache. She conceived and threw the newly born baby into the pit latrine.
“The owner of the toilet heard a baby crying inside the toilet and called for well-wishers to help save the baby. They demolished the toilet and retrieved the baby,” says Tembo.
He adds both the suspect and her baby are currently receiving treatment at the Mzuzu Central Hospital.
Phiri is expected to appear in court soon to answer applicable charges levelled against her.
She hails from Village Headman Magawa Zimba in the area of Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba district.
